Baba Harbans Singh Ji belongs to this glorious tradition of Kar Sewa organisation. He was born on 1st January, 1923 in village Noorpur Thal, District Sargodha of Punjab (now in Pakistan). Coincidently, the historical Kar Sewa of Sri Harmandir Sahib was laso in progress at that time. Both, his father S. Asa Singh ji and mother, Mata Dharam Kaur ji, were deeply religious minded persons. From the very childhood, Baba Harbans Singh ji was always keen to join company of Sikh Saints and other religious persons.
In 1943, when Kar Sewa for construction of Historical Shrines of Nankana Sahib (a place associated with advent of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and now in Punjab, Pakistan) was in progress under the noble guidance and personal supervision of Sant Baba Gurmukh Singh ji, abandoning the domestic life the young Harbans Singh Ji came to Nankana Sahib. As ordained by Baba Gurmukh Singh ji, he resolved to dedicate his whole life to Kar Sewa Organisation.
Baba Harbans Singh Ji initially worked under the noble guidance of Baba Jhanda Singh Ji, Baba Dalip Singh Ji and Baba Jiwan Singh Ji. At first, he was entrusted with the Kar Sewa work at Pehowa (in Haryana). He came to Delhi in 1976 and started the Kar Sewa work of Constructing of a large bathing tank(Sarovar) at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib on 6th June, 1976. Then construction of Langar Hall at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and a mamoth Diwan Hall named as Lakhi Shah Banjara Hall was constructed at Gurduwara Rakab Ganj Complex.
Baba Harbans Singh Ji's permanent headquarter is located at a place adjoining to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. From here, Baba Ji now controls and guides all the Kar Sewa projects under implementation at Delhi and in Haryana, U.P., J&K and other places in the country.
He is responsible for construction of new buildings and Tanks at Various Sikh Historcial Shrines in Delhi. New magnificient and beautiful building have been completed at Gurdwaras Nanak Piayo, Majnu Tilla, Bala Shib, Dam Dama Sahib, Moti Bagh, Mata Sundri and at Mehrauli - the martyrdom place of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. Besides hall of Gurdwara Sis Ganj has been expanded and work of widening hall at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is in progress Guru Tegh Bahadur Niwas for comfortable stay of pilgrims Visting Shrines, has been constructed at a place near Gurdwara Sis Ganj where a kotwali existed earlier. Recently, a site has been acquired at fountain, Chandni Chowk Delhi opposite Gurdwara Sis Ganj and construction cf building work is in progress for Auditorium etc in the memory of Bhai Mati Dass ji. In Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Complex, large number of buildings have come up for a big printing press, Gurmat Sangeet Vidyalya, langar Halls and administrative block for administrative offices of Delhi Sikh Gurdwaras Managing Committee and mammoth Diwan (Assembly) Hall named Lakhi Shah Vanjara Hall.
In Gurdwara Bangla Sahib Complex, building for Langar Hall, Baba Baghel Museum and a Charitable Hospital have been Constructed. Besides Delhi, a large number of new buildings have been Constructed at Historical Shrines in Haryana, U.P. and Jammu Kashmir. The list is endless as more and more buildings are coming up.
Baba Harbans singh ji is truly a living legend. He is apostle of humility, leads a very simple and truly religious life and has no personal ambitions at all. In fact, all his associates, particularly Baba Jagir Singh ji, Baba Karnail Singh ji and Bakhshi Joginder Singh ji are fully devoted to Kar Sewa Organisation and have dedicated their lives to this cause. He insists on recitation of 'Waheguru' to all persons who come to him. His vision is welfare of humanity irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion or nationality. He is an embodiment of love and compassion.
