Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib
|
Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is situated in Chandni Chowk, between Jain Mandir and the Town Hall , New Delhi .
This gurdwara is associated with the Ninth Guru, Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. It marks the site where Guru Sahib was martyred on the orders of the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had unleashed a reign of terror and ordered that Hindus be forcibly converted to Islam. On the request of Kashmiri Pandits, Guru Sahib took up their cause and told them to tell the Emperor that if he could convince the Guru to embrace Islam, they would all do so.
At this,Aurangzeb summoned Guru Sahib to Delhi. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji reached Agra after a long journey from Anandpur Sahib. He was arrested and brought to Delhi for his meeting with Aurangzeb. No amount of persuasion could make the Guru renounce his religion and embrace Islam. Finally, Aurangzeb ordered that the Guru be martyred. The followers of Guru Sahib, Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and Bhai Dyala Ji , who had accompanied him, were brutally killed in front of his eyes. Finally, the Guru was martytred on the 11th of November, 1675. Bhai Jaita Ji took the severed head of Guruji to Anandpur Sahib while Bhai Lakhi Shah carried away the Guru’s body for cremation in Delhi

The present building of the Gurdwara was raised in 1930. The main Gurdwara hall has now been widened. In 1971, the adjacent building of the Kotwali, where Guru Sahib was held in captivity, was purchased by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and a three storeyed building has been constructed.
