Gurudwara Nanak Piao Sahib
|
Gurdwara Nanak Piyao is located on the Grand Trunk Road (National Highway-1) between Rana Pratap Bagh and Azadpur, New Delhi.
This gurdwara is associated with the First Guru, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. During his eastern tour in 1505, Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Delhi. He camped in a garden on the outskirts of Delhi. Many people came to visit him here and soon, a free kitchen was started for wayfarers, who got food and water from a baoli or well.
The owner of the garden donated the land to the Guru and called it Guru Nanak’s Shrine, or Nanak Piyao. All donations received by the Guru were distributed to the needy in the evening. One day, the Guru came across two men in the garden. They were crying over an apparently dead elephant. The Guru told them not to cry as the elephant was still alive. He helped them to revive the poor animal. When some time later, the elephant of Emperor Sikandar Lodhi died, he summoned Guru Sahib and told him to revive the animal. The Guru explained to him that birth and death are the rights of the Divine Being and he could do nothing to make the elephant live again. The Emperor was angered and he imprioned the Guru. Soon after, a violent earthquake shook Delhi. Convinced that the imprisonment of a holy man like the Guru had invited a curse, the Emperor ordered his immediate release.
