Gurudwara Panjokhara Sahib
|
Gurdwara Panjhokhra Sahib is located in the village Panjhokhra, about ten kms from Ambala along the Ambala Naraingarh Road.
Gurdwara Panjhokhra Sahib commemorates the visit of the Eighth Guru, Guru Harkrishan, during his stay here while on his way to Delhi in 1664. The Guru had been summoned to meet the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. A large number of Sikhs accompanied the Guru when he left Kiratpur. As he reached Panjhokhra on the third day of the journey, the Guru raised a small mound and planted a flag there.
He told his Sikhs not to follow him beyond the flag and to have faith in divine dispensation. A learned but conceited Brahmin of the village, Lalji taunted the Guru by saying that he whose name was Krishan did not know anything about the Bhagwad Gita. An illiterate water carrier, Chajju, was passing by when he said this. Guruji called Chajju and made him deliver a discourse on the Gita, even as he placed his stick on Chajju’s head. Lalji was stunned by the scholarly discourse and falling at the feet of the Guru, begged forgiveness. Guru Harkrishan spent three days here before proceeding to Delhi. A local committee appointed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee looks after the management of the Gurdwara.
